Ben’s Chili Bowl U St is closing for repairs on July 14th
Ben’s Chili Bowl U Street will temporarily close its doors at midnight on Monday, July 14th, 2025, for essential repairs and upgrades. The closure is expected to last four months, with a Grand Reopening planned for November 2025. This marks the first major repair to the historic building in over six decades. The updates will focus on preserving the integrity and heritage of the beloved space while ensuring that it remains a welcoming and safe gathering place for future generations.
Ben’s Chili Bowl has been a cornerstone of the DC community since 1958, where locals, celebrities, politicians, and generations of families have come together over delicious food, great music, and unforgettable stories. As we prepare for the future, we invite everyone to celebrate the past.
“Ben’s has always been about more than just food. It’s also about family, community, and history,” says Virginia Ali. “We’ve welcomed generations of guests through our doors, and now we’re taking this time to care for the space that has meant so much to so many. It’s time to give it some love, so it can serve another generation.”

Between July 7th and July 14th, Ben’s invites you to stop by, take a photo with Virginia “Mom” Ali, and share your favorite Ben’s Chili Bowl story—whether it’s a late-night meal after a concert, a first date, a family tradition passed down through decades, or friends sharing a fun moment.

Selected stories and images will be featured on Ben’s Chili Bowl social media platforms throughout the repair period as a tribute to the people who’ve made Ben’s what it is.
This isn’t goodbye, it’s see you soon! This is a moment to reflect upon where we’ve been and look forward to where we’re going. We’re so excited to welcome everyone back later this year with the same spirit, same flavors, same history, and a refreshed space that honors our roots to welcome you all home.
